Certification Programs
- Foundations in Copyright Management and Leadership (Level One, includes 8-week Foundations Course plus one 2-week elective (E) workshop; total 10 weeks)

- Description: This foundations course provides an overview of copyright issues that impact higher education. Participants will develop a framework for addressing ownership of distance education course materials, e-reserves, fair use, the TEACH Act, open access initiatives, licensing mechanisms and processes, assessment of institutional copyright policies, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and development of campus copyright awareness. - Advanced Topics in Copyright Management and Leadership (Level Two, includes three 4-week advanced courses (A); total 12 weeks)
- Description: Whereas the Level One Certification provides an opportunity to study copyright issues more generally through the Foundations Course and to take a focused topical workshop elective, Level Two Certification offers advanced course electives focusing on specific topics from which registrants may choose. Each advanced course is four (4) weeks. Individuals who successfully complete three (3) advanced courses are awarded Level Two Certification. Learn more.

- Description: This workshop will focus upon learning some introductory principles, identifying the role of copyright in K-12 and education generally, and demystifying copyright for use in the classroom and beyond. Learn more.

- Description: The two pioneering academics who changed industry practice with best-practices codes for fair use explain both the law and the importance of these new codes as tools for practitioners, and they explore with you how this model could work in your community. Learn more.

- Description: Living in a digitally dominated world raises numerous critical and important questions, particularly for copyright holders and for those who face the decisions of what, when, and how to digitize. This course, which assumes a working knowledge of copyright basics, will address the legal and ethical issues and copyright considerations underpinning the formation of a responsible and balanced digitization practice, policy, procedure or workflow. - Description: Learn more about these two important movements and some of the issues associated with copyright, licensing, and consumer use from a founding member of Creative Commons and leading advocate for open access over the Internet to the research that appears in scholarly and scientific journals. - Description: This workshop will focus upon the Work for Hire doctrine and will examine—and seek to clarify—some of the complex issues of authorship and ownership surrounding works prepared by employees within the scope of their employment and those works specially ordered or commissioned for use in certain defined situations. - Description: Join educator Trisha Davis as she shares her knowledge and experience with licensing of electronic resources and copyright issues, developed both inside and outside of university classrooms and libraries. This advanced course assumes a foundational knowledge of basic licensing law and terms as well as the management of licenses. It also seeks both to address more complex rights issues as well as to introduce new standards and best practices for those who already have some experience in the field of licensing. Learn more.

*(A) — This is an Advanced Course. Taken together, these four-week courses are offered for Certification Level Two (see Certification for more details), but they may also be taken apart from the Certificate program, either singly or multiple, but participants will not receive Certification.
