2010 CIP Symposium: Pre-Symposium Seminars

Copyright 101

Our Copyright 101 workshop will provide an overview of the Copyright Act, with an emphasis on the provisions that support services for library patrons and the broader public. We’ll focus on the reasons for the diminishing utility of many of these provisions, and the corresponding increase in the need to rely on fair use to facilitate a broad array of library services. The workshop will conclude with a case study on fair use to to gain a deeper understanding of this important exception by exploring its role in library, museum and archival digitization projects. Participants will develop a better understanding of the risk involved in relying on fair use, the importance of discussing individual and institutional risk tolerance levels, and strategies to strengthen confidence in risk-taking to provide digital services in support of institutional missions.
