Lord of the Flies and Columbine High School Shooting On April 20, 1990 a horrible tragedy occurred, the Columbine High School Massacre. It was one of the most horrible school shootings in the United States. When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebod killed students at their high school, it was similar to Lord of the Flies where children were stranded on an island by themselves with no adults, and they gradually started to become more violent ending up trying to kill each other. What drove these boys to do such horrible things?

How is it possible to kill people especially when you are in elementary school or high school? In Lord of the Flies a plane crashes carrying boys. The survivors all gather at the beach by a conch blown by Ralph a fair and athletic boy. You see Jack and his choir all in uniform and survivors from the plane at the beach sitting around Ralph. They vote Ralph as leader oppose of Jack. Ralph uses the conch to call meetings and everyone shows up and listens to Ralph’s orders, but just for a short time. They start to do whatever they want. The children love the conch, it is like their idol.

But things start to get out of hand. Jack starts to disobey Ralph’s orders and do whatever he wants. He starts to hunt and loves the idea of killing something. His desire grows and grows. He starts to get followers and makes a group of his own. Ralph is left alone with few boys, Piggy and Simon. Piggy is different from the others; he has asthma, glasses, fat, and very smart. Simon is also different, he represents religion. Jack and his tribe began to do whatever they want. They soon became like savages. They all began to paint their faces, bother the others, and hunt.

When they killed a pig they did a savage like celebration, especially Roger. Roger loves violence; it amuses him to watch other people in pain or suffer. Roger is crueler than Jack. During one of their celebrations they mistaken Simon as the beast and brutally killed him. Ralph and Piggy had enough of Jack and his tribe actions. They both went to go confront them. But when Piggy was talking Roger released a rock killing Piggy. Ralph fled. Ralph went back but Samneric, twins who used to be in Ralph’s group, warned him to hide because Jack was going to kill him.

Jack and his tribe and gone from innocent children to savages. They first started to hunt pigs and now they start to kill humans. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebod were both ordinary teenagers like us. But they were constantly picked on by other students. This caused their hatred for other students and later their shooting. They became outcasts just like Jack when he lost the election against Ralph. They joined the Trenchcoat Mafia, a group of students who were basically picked on, the outcasts. The Trenchcoat Mafia looked up to Adolph Hitler just as the savages looked up to Jack.

This group also wore black trench coats, similar to how Jack and his tribe wore face paint to conceal their identity. They still were constantly picked on so they created a list of people they hated; jocks, blacks, Christians. These were the people they targeted on the day of the shooting and others that picked on them. People that were different from them just like how Jack and his tribe were picking on and later trying to kill Ralph, Piggy, and Simon. . Ralph was athletic and good looking and Jack hated him just like Eric and Dylan hated jocks. They made threats on their websites and videos they made.

Eric and Dylan started to organize a massacre at their high school to kill as many students as they can. Eric is like Jack, they both have hatred for other people. But Dylan is like Roger who both enjoys violence and wanting to kill people. Eric was just mad at people while Dylan wanted to kill them make them suffer for what they did to them. On April 20, 1999 the day of their shooting they saw a friend of theirs Brooks Brown before entering the school to go on their rampage. They told Brooks Brown to go home, just like Samneric telling Ralph to hide because Jack was going to kill him.

Eric and Dylan went into the school and started killing students. They headed to the library where they killed most of the people. They found a girl name Cassei Bernall and asked her if she believed in God. She answered yes and they killed her. Just like Jack and his tribe who killed Simon who represented religion. After Eric’s and Dylan’s shooting, they took their own lives. You saw how these boys gradually started to kill. Eric and Dylan were ordinary students like us who were picked on and tortured by other students. This caused them to hate them and wanted to kill them.

Jack and his tribe started to kill because they thought it was fun and that the other people were different from them.
