Macbeth Diary

Dear Journal, Last time I wrote was when I was leaving to go into battle. So much has happened since then – I don’t know where to start! I will begin with the battle. It was a difficult battle with many twists and turns along way, and just when we thought we had victory in our court, some more fighting broke out. Throughout the battles I stayed strong and confident, even when everyone was looking down. I managed to kill the traitor, Macdonwald, and was then informed that anymore traitor will be punished by death.

In the battlefield, I stood up as a leader, and brought victory to our country! Sadly, I have not felt very good about my thoughts and actions since then. My terrible thoughts started with 3 witches. As Banquo and I were on our way back to King Duncan’s castle, we were met by three weird sisters, they gave Banquo and I prophecies regarding our futures. Mine were as follows: 1. I will be Thane of Glamis, 2. I will be Thane of Cawdor, and 3. I will be king, after Duncan’s reign.

Not long after, the witches disappeared, and I was met by messengers of King Duncan, and I was informed that I was now Thane of Cawdor because the previous thane was a traitor. 2 of the 3 prophecies had now come true, and murderous thoughts entered my head. I sent word to my wife, informing about all these events, and then continued on to the King’s castle. Once I arrived, I was informed that the King would be visiting my castle tonight, so I sent a messenger home to tell my wife to prepare for our guests.

I also started my journey back. I got home to find my wife planning Duncan’s downfall; I was surprised to see her thinking like this, but also relieved at the same time. She had immediately began to not only prepare for his arrival, but also prepare to his murder that very night. Nothing about this felt right, I never thought that it would come to this. I wanted to back out of this scheme, because assassination of the king was the highest degree of treason, and is punishable by death.

After Duncan arrived, Lady Macbeth assured me that this is what was best, and that it would give us the power we deserved; if we stuck by her plan, nothing could go wrong. We both put on the mask of the happy hosts, and entertained our guests. Everyone is now preparing for rest, and my chance is soon approaching. I hope I have the courage to go through with this because this is my only chance to fulfill the third prophecy – at least that is what my wife says. I must leave now and have a final meeting with the king before he goes to bed. Sincerely, Macbeth
