Polar Night.

Polar Night.

Polar Night “Anxiety roared in the she-bear’s blood. Her heart was bursting. She pushed the cubs, and turned to meet her enemies. She reared up onto the ice and galloped toward them, a charge that nothing could stop-not even death-if they stayed to face it”. This quote is one of the few examples from the short story Polar Night that shows the theme of the story that takes place in the freezing arctic.

Norah Burke described the mother bear was the largest of the arctic, nothing posed a threat to her. Carrying two cubs in her womb, she knew she had to care for three now. She eats everything she can to store food for her and her cubs to survive when polar night comes along. This is one of the small examples of only the fittest survives, she is proving her will of survival by making sure he is stored for a long period of time for her and her cubs.

She doesnt take chances with the humans who she refers to as “upright seals”, as proof of her wise instinct she has gained over the years. “She reared up onto the ice and galloped toward them, a charge that nothing could stop-not even death-if they stayed to face it”. Norah Burke had detailed and shown the mothers every will to protect what she loved and to be the fittest to survive. The mother bear knows she must show courage even through any fear to survive against a threat.

After her young was wounded, she knew she must do everything to protect them from getting injured any worse, so she charges at the men to scare them off with her large size. In the end, Noah proves the mother to be the fittest in the arctic. She tells the story of the mother as showing no fear and will do anything for her cubs to survive. The great bear will see many more polar nights and raise many new cubs for the rest of her life, knowing she is one of the fittest and will survive.
